In a world driven by constant advertisements and a culture of excess, it's essential to pause and reflect on our consumption habits. Overconsumption not only affects our personal well-being and home but also has far-reaching consequences on the environment.
We are buying 60% more than we were 15 years ago.
A garment is worn an average of 7 times before it is discarded.
It takes 500+ for polyester fabric to decompose.
I have spent the last 8 years working on my own consumer mindset to undo what 23 years of constant advertising and societal pressure has told me I NEED or MUST buy. I have built up a vast list of questions to ask myself before I make a purchase to ensure I really need something and I will be using it for a long period of time. Initially the decision making process took a while as I had to ask myself a lot of questions but with time and practise I can now do this within seconds and I rarely regret a purchase or discard it to the back of a cupboard to collect dust.
Ask Yourself:
Do I Need This, or Do I Want This?
What Purpose Does This Serve in My Life?
Am I Buying to Fill an Emotional Void?
Can I Borrow or Share Instead of Owning? (Try before you buy)
How Often Will I Use This?
What Impact Does This Purchase Have on the Environment?
Am I Falling Victim to Consumer Trends?
Can I Repurpose or Upcycle Something I Already Own?
Do I Have a Similar Item Already?
What Is the Longevity of This Product?
Am I Making Impulse Purchases?
Can I Afford This Without Financial Strain?
Am I Going To Clean & Maintain This Item?
By incorporating these questions into your decision-making process, you can cultivate a more mindful and intentional approach to consumption. Remember, each small choice contributes to a more sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle, benefitting both you and the world around you. Let's make conscious decisions that align with our values and lead to a more meaningful existence.
