Everyone has a unique vision of what "tidy," "organised," and "clutter-free" mean. By picturing your ideal environment, you can better understand the changes you need to make.
Reflecting on Your Motivation
To dig deeper into your motivations, ask yourself the following questions:
How is clutter affecting your daily life? Identify the specific ways clutter disrupts your routine, creates stress, or impacts your overall well-being.
Why is it important to address this now? Consider any immediate triggers or events prompting your desire to declutter, such as an upcoming move or a significant life change.
How would you feel if the space remained unchanged? Reflect on the emotional and practical consequences of not decluttering.
Do you feel comfortable having guests over? Think about how your current space affects your social interactions.
Do you want a more restful sleep environment? A clutter-free bedroom can contribute to better sleep quality.
Do you want a more functional kitchen or dining area? An organised kitchen can make healthy meal preparation and dining more enjoyable.
Do you want to find items more easily? Consider the time and stress saved by having an orderly space.
Crafting a Strong "Why" Statement
Your “why” should be deeply personal and specific, something that resonates with you on a profound level. It's more than just wanting a tidy home—it’s about how decluttering can improve your life. For instance, if clutter is affecting your mental health, relationships, or finances, acknowledge these impacts.
A powerful “why” statement could be, "I want to declutter so I can focus on my business goals without distractions, save money by knowing what I have, and ultimately achieve my dream of buying my own home." This was my statement when I first started my decluttering journey. I needed a focused environment to pursue my business goals. The clutter around me was a constant distraction, preventing me from achieving my financial dreams. By simplifying my space, I not only created a more conducive work environment but also gained clarity and control over my finances, helping me move closer to my goal of homeownership.
Give yourself the time to sit down with a pen and paper, write out all the reasons you want to declutter and then get a little deeper with it. You may find it helpful to print out your statement and stick it up somewhere you will see it every day.
