Why Less Changed Everything for Me And How a Bespoke Home Decluttering Service Can Change Your Life Too

When More Stuff Didn’t Make Me Happier
In my early twenties, I thought having more stuff would bring me happiness. I was at university, free from bills, with a modest allowance that vanished on nights out, takeaway pizzas, and new clothes from the Arndale Centre in Manchester. My halls room overflowed with crates of shoes and drawers full of clubbing outfits, always chasing the next item that promised to make me feel better, more put together.
But underneath it all, I never truly felt like I had enough. I was stuck in the cycle of buying, accumulating, and feeling overwhelmed by it all.
The Moment My Mindset Shifted
Everything changed when my partner put on a documentary about minimalism, it was around 2017. Almost immediately, I gathered a huge pile of things to declutter and started simplifying my home and my life.
That shift wasn’t just about tidying up or getting organised. It was about realising I didn’t need more. I needed less. Less clutter, less noise, less distraction.
And with that came calm, clarity, and a deep sense of contentment.
Why Organising Alone Isn’t Enough
I see this every day in my work as a professional organiser offering a bespoke home decluttering service. Many people believe the answer is better organising, more boxes, shelves, or clever storage solutions.
But organising without decluttering simply moves clutter from one place to another.
If you don’t consciously reduce what comes in and make intentional decisions about what stays, the chaos returns. The overwhelm stays. The cycle continues.
Decluttering Without Sacrificing What You Love
A common misconception I want to clear up is that decluttering means becoming a minimalist or getting rid of things you love.
That’s not true.
Decluttering is about creating a home that supports you, a space that makes you feel good and reflects your lifestyle and values. It’s about letting go of the excess so you can see and enjoy the things you truly cherish.
How Simplifying Your Home Changes How You Live
After working with me through The Residence, a tailored, in-person decluttering experience, my clients often tell me they feel calmer, lighter, and more in control.
They find it easier to clean and maintain their homes. They feel freer to invite friends over. Even if life gets a little untidy sometimes, their homes are easy to reset.
The mental load of “I must get this done” lifts because the clutter is finally gone. They move through their space with intention and confidence.
