Our bedrooms are often a reflection of our lives—a space that should be a sanctuary but can quickly become cluttered, especially if you live in a shared house. With limited personal space, it’s easy for your bedroom to become a catch-all for clothes, beauty products, books, random gadgets, and more. But while it may seem harmless, a cluttered bedroom can have a significant impact on your sleep, mood, and overall well-being.
Let’s explore why our bedrooms become cluttered, the benefits of decluttering, and practical strategies to create a peaceful and organised retreat.
Why Do Our Bedrooms Become Cluttered?
If you live in a shared house often means your bedroom doubles as your personal storage space, your office, and sometimes even your living room. Even if you don't share your home, over time, things accumulate—clothes you no longer wear, beauty products you’ve forgotten about, and sentimental items you can’t quite let go of.
We also tend to postpone decisions about our belongings, thinking we’ll deal with them later. But "later" often turns into piles of stuff that crowd our physical and mental space.
The Impact of Bedroom Clutter on Your Sleep and Mood
A cluttered bedroom can:
Disrupt your sleep: Visual chaos can make it harder to relax and signal your brain that it’s time to rest.
Affect your mood: Waking up to a messy room can feel overwhelming, setting a negative tone for the day.
Compromise your health: Dust accumulation, potential mouldy food, and trip hazards can affect both your physical and mental well-being.
Benefits of Decluttering Your Bedroom
Awareness of Your Belongings: Touching everything you own helps you realise what you already have, preventing unnecessary purchases.
Improved Mental Health: A clutter-free space fosters calmness and reduces stress.
Simplified Daily Routines: Knowing where everything is saves time and reduces decision fatigue.
How to Declutter Your Bedroom
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to decluttering, so choose a method that suits your personality and schedule:
Option 1: The Big Challenge
Dedicate a day or two to tackle your bedroom in one go. Follow these steps:
Empty Everything: Take all items out and sort them into categories (e.g., clothes, books, beauty products).
Sort and Assess: Go through each category, asking yourself:
When was the last time I used this?
Did I even know I had this?
Will I use this in the next 12 months?
If I regretted decluttering this, could I replace it?
Separate Bin Bags:
Rubbish: For items that can’t be reused.
Recycling: For items like paper and certain plastics.
Charity: For gently used items.
To Sell: For unopened beauty products, shoes, or clothing.
Option 2: One Category a Day
Perfect for reducing overwhelm, this method involves tackling one category per day. Start with an easier category to build confidence, such as:
Beauty Products: Check expiry dates. The small symbol with a number and an “M” (e.g., 12M) indicates how many months the product is good for after opening.
Categories could include; clothing, shoes, beauty products, makeup, hair products, bedding, sentimental items.
Option 3: Work Clockwise
If you struggle with where to start, begin at the door and work clockwise around the room. This structured approach ensures you cover all areas and can easily pick up where you left off if you need a break.
Decluttering Tips and Tricks
Have Three Bags Ready: One for rubbish, one for recycling, and one for charity.
Ask Yourself Key Questions: Be honest about whether you need, use, or love each item.
Stay Focused: Avoid moving items to other rooms until you finish decluttering your bedroom. I like to create piles in the hallways of items that are destined for living room, bathroom, ect.
A calm, organised bedroom is more important than you might realise. It’s a space where you start and end your day, and its condition can influence your mindset and overall well-being. By decluttering, you’re creating an environment that promotes relaxation, better sleep, and a clearer mind.
So, grab your bin bags, roll up your sleeves, and reclaim your sanctuary. A clutter-free bedroom is just a few steps away!
